If you are looking for a rescue please email me and I will try to help you find a dog in need.  I have been particularly watching a group of shelters in Georgia with a very high kill rate.  There are many wonderful dogs and puppies down there in desperate circumstances.  While it might seem more expensive to adopt a dog from Georgia, it really isn't because adoption and spay/neuter fees are much lower there.. usually low enough to make up for the transportation costs.  If a local dog is of more interest to you, I will try to help you locate a rescue dog closer to home.

Another rescue success story

Before                                                     After

Chuckie is a purebred Labrador, who wound up at death row in a kill shelter when his owner had a serious illness and couldn't take care of him any more.  As an owner turn-in and since Chuckie is missing a front leg, his chances for adoption were slim to nothing and he would have been put down SOON.  Thanks to Karlene and Labrador Rescue, Chuckie was saved and now has found his forever home.  What a change!  The "before" picture was right after Karlene sprung him from the pound.  He's so skinny you can see every bone in his face.  And look at that worried look!  In the "after" photo he's wrestling with his new daddy.  He's in proper weight and with a healthy glow to him, but nothing says it better than the big grin on his face.
THANKS KARLENE

Responsible breeders make sure our babies go to great homes, and we stand behind them for life.  Unfortunately most dogs do NOT come from responsible breeders, and most dogs don't go to great homes.  Many poor dogs have been either dumped in a shelter or turned loose to be picked up by animal control.  A few of these dogs will make it to rescue, a no-kill shelter, or be adopted.  Many will be euthanized, within a few days of being picked up, to make room for the next stray.

Breed rescue is for Labradors that don't have a family and desperately need one.  These dogs are usually (though not always) in foster homes that have made sure they are healthy, up-to-date on their shots and medical, spayed or neutered, and spent some time evaluating their temperaments.  A rescue dog might bring along health or behavior issues as baggage, so carefully consider whether your family is able to handle their possible special needs.  The rescue or foster home can usually give you some insights on what to expect.   If you are, adopting a rescue is a wonderful option for getting a new companion!

Shelter dogs have unknown breeding so who knows what kind of genetic conditions they have.  They weren't bred for temperament so some might have issues, and then some have been upset by their experience and might be afraid.  Some have health problems from lack of medical care or from being in the shelter with other strays... heartworm, intestinal worms, fleas, etc.  Many are malnourished.  Adopting a shelter dog is not always a piece of cake.  But you might save a life, and get a great friend.  I've adopted a couple shelter dogs myself and they were terrific.  Mine had no health or behavior issues and were wonderful pets for many years.
